Alaçatı

Alaçatı is a neighbourhood in Çeşme district of İzmir province. It has a coast to the Aegean Sea. It is famous for its historical stone houses and beaches suitable for windsurfing due to the wind 360 days a year. It has developed a lot in recent years thanks to its stone houses.

According to 2000 figures, the population is 8.401 people. Alaçatı, which has many entertainment venues and hotels in its 704 square kilometre area, is one of the important holiday resorts of the Aegean Region.

The ancient name of Alaçatı is Agrillia. Alaçatı takes its name from an Ottoman tribe called 'Alacaat'. During the Ottoman period, Greeks and Turks lived in Alaçatı. Since the pronunciation of the word 'Alacaat' is difficult in Greek, 'Alacaat' changes over time and takes the name Alaçatı, which is used today.
